Accurate calculation of material requirements per square meter (m²) is essential for cost estimation, project planning, and structural efficiency. This paper presents a comprehensive engineering methodology for calculating AAC block requirements per m², including joint thickness consideration, wall geometry, waste factor, and field-based adjustment methods. The study integrates international construction standards and practical field experience in tropical environments such as Bali, Indonesia. Keywords: AAC block, lightweight brick, material estimation, BOQ, construction engineering, wall system, civil engineering. 1. Introduction In modern construction systems, wall materials play a significant role in determining structural efficiency, construction speed, and cost optimization. One of the most widely used wall materials is Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) block, also known as lightweight brick. AAC blocks are preferred due to: Lightweight properties Faster installation compared to conventional bricks Thermal insulation advantages Reduced structural load However, improper calculation of material requirements often leads to cost overrun or material shortage. 2. Technical Specification of AAC Blocks Typical AAC block dimensions: Length: 600 mm Height: 200 mm Thickness: 75–200 mm (depending on application) Standard mortar joint thickness: Horizontal joint: 10 mm Vertical joint: 10 mm 3. Theoretical Calculation Concept The basic principle of AAC block estimation is based on wall area coverage: Wall Area = Length × Height (m²) Each AAC block contributes a specific coverage area depending on joint spacing. 4. Engineering Formula for AAC Requirement 4.1 Block Coverage Area Effective block area: Block Length = 0.6 m Block Height = 0.2 m Effective area: A_block = 0.6 × 0.2 = 0.12 m² 4.2 Blocks per m² N = \frac{1}{0.12} Result: N ≈ 8.33 blocks per m² 4.3 With Mortar Joint Correction Factor In real field conditions: Joint loss Cutting waste Breakage Correction factor: CF = 1.05 – 1.10 Final formula: N_{final} = 8.33 \times CF Typical field requirement: 8.7 – 9.2 blocks per m² 5. Field Adjustment Factors 5.1 Wall Geometry Factor Walls with openings (doors/windows) reduce total material requirement. 5.2 Waste Factor Construction waste typically 3%–8%. 5.3 Cutting Loss Edges and corners increase material usage. 5.4 Skilled Labor Factor Improper installation increases consumption. 6. Diagram: Wall Block Arrangement Concept | AAC | AAC | AAC | |-----|-----|-----| | AAC | AAC | AAC | |-----|-----|-----| | AAC | AAC | AAC | Each unit is interlocked using mortar joints (vertical + horizontal). 7. Material Take-Off (MTO) Example Example project: Wall area = 120 m² Total\ Blocks = 120 \times 8.7 Result: ≈ 1044 AAC blocks 8. Cost Estimation Integration (RAB Method) Total cost includes: AAC block cost Adhesive mortar Labor cost Scaffolding Waste factor 9. Field Experience (Bali Construction Projects) Based on field observation: AAC usage increases efficiency by 30–40% compared to red brick Skilled labor significantly reduces waste Moisture conditions affect adhesive performance Transport logistics affect cost in remote Bali areas 10. Advantages of AAC System Lightweight → reduces structural load Faster installation Thermal insulation Eco-friendly material High dimensional accuracy 11. Limitations Requires specialized adhesive Fragile during handling Requires skilled installation Higher initial material cost 12. Discussion AAC block estimation is not only mathematical but also dependent on field engineering practice. Variations in workmanship and site conditions significantly influence actual consumption. Integration of theoretical calculation and field adjustment provides the most accurate results. 13. Conclusion The calculation of AAC block requirements per m² is essential for efficient construction planning. The standard theoretical value is approximately 8.33 blocks/m², while field-adjusted values range from 8.7 to 9.2 blocks/m² depending on site conditions. 14.
