This paper elucidates the standardized methodologies for establishing absolute spatial positioning, transitioning from classical trigonometric leveling to modern GNSS-derived orthometric height determination. We examine the mathematical rigorousness of coordinate transformation, the application of geoid models for elevation correction, and the propagation of observational errors. By standardizing the workflow from benchmark establishment to local site grid projection, this study ensures engineering-grade accuracy in structural layout and site leveling, essential for high-precision civil works in complex topographical environments like Bali. 1. Introduction Every structural project commences with the establishment of a "Survey Control Network." If the primary coordinate and elevation control are flawed, the entire structural grid will be misaligned, leading to catastrophic design-to-field failures. The determination of these points requires a systematic approach to geodetic measurement, where relative observations are anchored to absolute global datums. This paper defines the procedures for establishing control points, emphasizing the importance of datum synchronization and instrument error mitigation. 2. Determining Horizontal Coordinates (E, N) Horizontal positioning is achieved by relating local site points to a known geodetic datum (e.g., WGS84) via high-precision GNSS observations or total station traverses. 2.1. Coordinate Projection Geodetic coordinates (latitude $\phi$, longitude $\lambda$) must be projected into a local Cartesian system (e.g., UTM or a local site grid). The transformation utilizes a scale factor ($k$) to account for the Earth's curvature on a flat plane. The distance on the projection ($D_p$) is related to the ellipsoidal distance ($D_e$): $$D_p = D_e \cdot k$$ 2.2. Coordinate Geometry (COGO) For internal site layout, surveyors utilize a baseline method. Given a reference point $P_0(E_0, N_0)$, a measured azimuth ($\theta$), and a horizontal distance ($d$): $$E_1 = E_0 + d \cdot \sin(\theta)$$ $$N_1 = N_0 + d \cdot \cos(\theta)$$ 3. Determining Elevation (Z) Elevation is the most critical metric for drainage and structural foundation leveling. 3.1. Trigonometric Leveling Modern surveys utilize the Total Station to determine elevation based on the Zenith angle ($\alpha$). For a target at slope distance ($S$): $$Z_1 = Z_0 + (S \cdot \cos(\alpha)) + h_i - h_r$$ Where $h_i$ is the instrument height and $h_r$ is the reflector height. 3.2. Orthometric Height Correction GNSS receivers measure Ellipsoidal Height ($h$), which is not equivalent to Orthometric Height ($H$, or Mean Sea Level). To determine the true elevation, the Geoid Undulation ($N$) must be subtracted: $$H = h - N$$ Failure to apply the Geoid model correction results in systematic vertical errors across the site, typically ranging from $10-30 \text{ cm}$. 4. Quality Control and Validation Validation is achieved through "Loop Closure." A traverse must close back to a secondary independent benchmark to ensure the misclosure remains within the tolerance of: $$T = \pm C \sqrt{k}$$ Where $k$ is the traverse distance in kilometers and $C$ is a constant based on the survey accuracy class (e.g., $C=10$ for standard construction). 5. Professional Recommendations Establishing your own site datums without expert geodetic validation is high-risk. Consultant Recommendation: Precise positioning is the lifeblood of construction. Conclusion The methodology for determining coordinates and elevations requires a synthesis of absolute satellite referencing and precise local measurements. By integrating Geoid models for elevation and employing closed-loop traverse checks, engineers can establish a reliable survey network that serves as the bedrock of construction accuracy. 4.
